We were in Europe for my birthday, and as we were traveling with a toddler, I assumed we wouldn't be doing anything fancy, and that was okay with me. Then one day, Hao told me had made a reservation at a nice place for my birthday dinner. I didn't believe him. I thought he was kidding! He had to show me the e-mail confirmation before I would believe him. Thanks, honey!
The unassuming exterior.
Complimentary cucumber water and my drink of choice, citronade.
Salmon sashimi with citrus soy and ginger - so refreshing and a welcome change from all the meat and potatoes we had been having in Prague.
Softshell crab with wasabi cream - this was amazing! Soft, fluffy, crunchy, everything just melted in my mouth.
Pork belly with watermelon - my favorite dish of the night.
Tea-smoked trout with green mango and starfruit - a really good combination. Harvey particularly enjoyed the green mango,
Mushroom with pumpkin sambal and dried beef powder - sounded weird but the flavors melded together really well.
Beef rendang with housemade roti and papaya salad (not pictured) - apparently all the previous courses were just appetizers and this was the entree. It was also served with rice. The roti was devoured by Harvey.
Chocolate chip cookie with peanut butter, caramel cheesecake, and sticky toffee pudding - they had me at sticky toffee pudding.
This was a really memorable birthday dinner because it was so unexpected. Now the pressure is on for Hao to make every birthday as memorable, haha!
Oh, and for people who wondered, they seated us in the back, probably because we had a toddler with us, but we didn't mind at all. We were glad to be able to eat somewhere nice and not disturb the rest of the patrons. And we weren't alone in the back. The place was full and Harvey happily behaved himself very well.

ReplyDeleteBelated Happy Birthday! The food look so good! Especially that pork belly with watermelon! What would you call the type of food that Sansho serves? Looks like a mix of a bunch of things.
ReplyDeleteIt's run bya British chef who learned Asian methods, so it's Asian fusion. Really good Asian fusion!
DeleteYum! The food looks fab. Seems like the chef successfully managed to pull off Asian fusion- a feat in itself.
